American Brain Injury Consortium

Welcome to the website of the American Brain Injury Consortium.

Our Mission

Started in April of 1993, a group of distinguished neurosurgeons dedicated to improving the outcome of brain injury patients, met to discuss the discouraging progress of the current clinical trials for traumatic brain injury and how to increase their scientific merit as well as helping our fellow mankind to live better.

The History of ABIC

In April of 1993, a group of distinguished neurosurgeons dedicated to improving the outcome of brain injury patients, met to discuss the discouraging progress of the current clinical trials for traumatic brain injury and how to increase their scientific merit. It was decided that the investigators would combine their expertise, experienced staff and head injured population for a more holistic approach to further advance science in harmony with the study of new pharmacologic therapies. This resulted in the formation of the American Brain Injury Consortium, a non-profit, academic, research based organization with the primary mission of designing, implementing and evaluating the results of clinical trials directed toward improving outcome of brain injury patients. Another important goal was to develop a uniform head injury data base for the archiving of important information derived from these clinical studies. This would provide a multi-purpose scientific base of information from which the design of future clinical trials could be tested and approved.

This approach enables a partnership between ABIC, Pharmaceutical/Biotechnology industry, private foundations and the National Institute of Health to evolve and provide sponsors with the recommendations and consultative services of the leading head injury experts during the critical phases of protocol design, development, implementation and analysis. By providing the optimal protocol design and quality control of the key data, each sponsor can be assured of a targeted trial to determine the effects of their investigational compound and the ability to answer scientific questions. A core data set was developed that enables the Consortium to test predicted outcome models, configure demographic data, increase reliability of outcome measures and to scientifically evaluate therapy intensity levels. This core data set is available for scientific analysis and publication, regardless of the positive or negative effects of the investigational compound.

Over the past fifteen years, ABIC has partnered with several pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies such as; Sterling, Sanofi-Winthrop, CIBA-Geigy, Cortech, SmithKline Beecham, Sandoz (Novartis), Parke-Davis, Pfizer, Pharmos and Fournier in the search for an effective agent. Many major scientific advances have been achieved as a result of these collaborative efforts. Our efforts have been internationally recognized and eventually led to the formation of the European Brain Injury Consortium (EBIC). The EBIC adopted these same principals and, together with ABIC and our sponsoring colleagues, shares the same challenge and desire to impact favorably on the outcome of severely brain injured patients worldwide.
